Ladder, box league or round-robin?

Most clubs end up with one of three formats. The right one depends on how often people can play and how many turn up.

Ladder

Everyone sits on one ranked list. You challenge someone a few places above you; win and you swap places. It never really ends, so late joiners slot in at the bottom.

Best for: busy clubs where people play when they can.

Box league

Players are split into boxes of four to six. Each box plays a round-robin over a few weeks, then the top of each box moves up and the bottom moves down.

Best for: a steady season with a fixed finish.

Round-robin league

One table, up to sixteen pairs or players, and everybody meets everybody once (or twice, home and away). The fixtures decide who plays when.

Best for: a one-season club championship.

Set it up in seven steps

Suggested club rules, not FIP rules

  1. 1Choose the format and the lengthSix to eight weeks suits most clubs: long enough for everyone to play several matches, short enough to stay interesting.
  2. 2Decide pairs or playersFixed pairs keep the table simple. If people want to play with different partners, run an individual ladder and let the challenger pick a partner.
  3. 3Seed the starting orderUse last season's table, a coach's view or a simple draw. In a box league, put similar levels together so every match is close.
  4. 4Write the challenge rulesAgree how far up a challenge can go, how long the challenged side has to reply and the date by which the match is played. See the example below.
  5. 5Pick the match format and scoringBest of three sets is usual, with a match tie-break in place of a third set if courts are short. A win is worth 3 points and a draw 1.
  6. 6Set one place to report scoresThe winners send the score within a day. One shared table that everyone can open stops disputes before they start.
  7. 7Plan the end of the seasonDecide now who moves up, who moves down and when the table resets, and announce the finish date at the start.

Challenge rules you can copy

Club ladder rules

  1. You may challenge a pair up to two places above you.
  2. The challenged pair replies within 3 days and offers at least two dates.
  3. The match is played within 14 days of the challenge, or the challenger wins by default.
  4. Best of three sets; a match tie-break replaces the third set.
  5. If the challenger wins, the two pairs swap places. If not, nothing changes.
  6. The winners report the score the same day. A pair cannot be challenged twice in one week.

Change the numbers to suit your club. What matters is that the same rules apply to everyone and that they are written down where players can find them.

Running a box league

Boxes turn a long list of players into several small leagues, which is easier to schedule. A box of four plays three rounds; a box of six plays five.

Players in a boxMatches eachRounds (once)Total matches
4336
545 (one bye each)10
65515

When the box finishes, the top one or two move up and the bottom one or two move down. Put each box into the league tracker as its own league, so every box has its own table, fixtures and share link.

Ties inside a box are settled by points first, then set difference, game difference and the result between the teams that are still level.

Common problems and fixes

  • Someone stops playingSet an inactivity rule: no match for four weeks and the pair drops a place, then another.
  • Matches are not getting playedShow the next date on the fixture list and book a recurring court slot for league matches.
  • Levels are unevenSeed carefully and let the table sort itself out; move players between boxes at the half-way point if needed.
  • Someone joins lateOn a ladder they start at the bottom. In a league, add them to the box that matches their level.
  • Scores are disputedAgree that the reported score stands unless the other side replies within 24 hours.
  • Courts are shortUse a match tie-break instead of a third set, or play one set to six games.

Padel ladder questions

What is a padel ladder?
A ranked list of pairs or players. You challenge someone a few places above you, and if you win the match you swap places. It runs all season and players can join at the bottom.
Ladder or box league: which is better?
A ladder suits clubs where people play whenever they can. A box league suits a fixed season with a finish date, because every box plays a round-robin and the top and bottom move between boxes.
How many places up can you challenge?
Two places is a common limit. It keeps matches close in level and stops the top pair being challenged by everyone.
How long should a season last?
Six to eight weeks suits most clubs. A box of four needs three rounds, a box of six needs five.
How do you stop matches being forgotten?
Put the deadline in the challenge rules, show the next date next to each fixture, and book a regular court slot for league matches.
Can I track a ladder or box league for free?
Yes. The league tracker handles box leagues and round-robin leagues directly, with a table, fixtures, a print sheet and a share link for each box. For a challenge ladder, log each challenge result there as a record while you move the places on your own list.

Take the rules to court too.
